GOVERNOR NEWSOM SIGNS SCHOOL FUNDING LEGISLATION AT SHEARER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

NVUSD hosted Gavin Newsom today at Shearer Elementary School. During the visit, he toured classrooms, learned about the district's free summer school program, and invited students to help him sign legislation providing an unprecedented level of state funding for public schools.

Local and state elected officials were in attendance, including our Board of Education, State Senator Bill Dodd, Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, and many labor and educational partners. The governor toured the district's unique, free summer school program currently providing academic, socio-emotional, and enrichment support to almost 2,000 Napa elementary students over 11 campuses.

"We are thrilled to host the Governor at Shearer Elementary, which has a very robust and enriching summer program aimed at mitigating learning loss and providing enrichment and socialization opportunities for students. Funding for summer programming is critical as many students need time to reinforce academic concepts while also participating in high-quality enrichment activities," said Superintendent Rosanna Mucetti. "This summer, thanks to state and federal funding, NVUSD provided full-time programming for our students, many who attend some of our highest-need schools."

Programming at the elementary and secondary level has been made possible by leveraging CARES Act funding provided to the district as a part of the federal COVID relief package and the Expanded Learning Opportunities Grant from the State of California.
